Insert bar

Docked at the side of a window is the Insert bar — the one go-to place for inserting objects into a document. It’s basically just the Insert menu transformed into a toolbar in combination with commands from the Drawing toolbar.

The Select mode (typically denoted by an icon of a mouse cursor) is triggered by pushing a Cancel button, which appears only when the user is within insertion mode.

Visible by default:

  • Paste
  • Text frame
  • File
    • The dialog should be redesigned to allow one to scan a picture
  • Table
  • Chart
  • Pencil tool
  • Pen tool
  • Rectangle
  • Ellipse
  • Line
In the overflow:
  • Shape library
    • It would make life simpler if we had flexible shape tools (akin to the polygon/star tool in Inkscape) instead of libraries of shapes
  • Floating frame
  • Formula
  • OLE object
  • Plug-in
  • Bookmark
  • Cross-reference
  • Script
  • Comment
  • Indexes/Tables
  • Fields
  • Special character
  • Formatting mark
  • Footnote/endnote
Deprecated features (only in the menu bar):
  • Envelope
  • Horizontal rule
